AMD’s keynote at CES was going mostly as expected until she introduced an unexpected guest: Panos Panay, EVP and Chief Product Officer at Microsoft. He was there to comment on their industry-first: a dedicated hardware AI engine built into an x86 PC (not to mention a laptop). With that appearance, Panay offered this quote: “…just like the mouse helped reinvent the graphical user interface… AI is going to reinvent how you do everything on Windows.”
Right now, an AI-powered PC can run effects on your webcam that automatically center you within the frame, or make it appear like you’re looking directly into the camera, even if you’re not. But beyond these, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella stated at the 2023 World Economic Forum that we can “fully expect” ChatGPT and other AI in “every product of Microsoft.” This isn’t empty rhetoric as Microsoft has already invested $1 billion into OpenAI, creators of DALL-E 2 and ChatGPT, and has integrated both of these with Azure. Microsoft is reportedly about to invest $10 billion more into OpenAI, valuing them at $29 billion.
